Physical Activity

This activity aims to develop the fundamental movement skills of balance, coordination, and locomotion (jumping, hopping).

How to Play
  1. Everyone stands in a circle.
  2. One child is selected to pick a vegetable or fruit.
  3. The selected child says the vegetable or fruit and a movement, such as “Carrot Jump”, and then everyone performs that movement.
  4. The next person has to think of another vegetable or fruit and another movement, such as “Potato Run”.
  5. Continue until everyone has had a turn.
Change it up / Alternatives / Additional Options
  • To make this easier, have pictures of the vegetable or fruit to remind the children what to say. Also, if the children cannot think of movements, the leader can add the movement after the child has said the piece of food.
  • For children with impairments in flexibility or gross motor skills, encourage them to perform the movements as much as they can, understanding that it may look different to others.
  • If you have a participant who uses a wheelchair, be intentional around the movements that you select to allow them to participate.
  • If you have a child with another type of disability not mentioned above, they may be able to participate in this activity without adaptations or modifications
