This activity aims to build the fundamental movement skills of balance (squatting, crouching), and coordination (reaching, stretching).

How to Play

Children pretend they are a flower growing from a seed and copy your actions as you act out the below story:

Flowers grow from seeds (crouch down small),

Seeds start to grow slowly and reach up towards sun (stand up slowly),

The plant gets taller and taller and reaches up towards the sun (stretch up on to tip toes and reach as high as you can),

The sun makes the plants petals come out (stretch your arms out sideways),

The wind blows the plant over to one side (bend sideways to try and touch your toes) and the other (bend to the other side),

At night, some flowers close their petals up (close your arms back in around your chest),

And shrink back towards the earth (crouch down again).

Change it up / Alternatives / Additional Options
  • You can make this more challenging by repeating the actions faster and faster as you go through the story.
  • For children with impairments in flexibility or gross motor skills, encourage them to move and stretch as much as they can, understanding that it may look different to others.
  • If you have a child with another type of disability not mentioned above, they may be able to participate in this activity without adaptations or modifications.
