Mother's Day!
Celebrating our moms
We should tell our mothers how much we appreciate them and all they do for us every day of the year, but especially on Mother’s Day. This special day occurs on the 2nd Sunday of May in Canada and is classically celebrated with breakfast-in-bed or going out for brunch as well as with handmade cards, gifts and/or bouquets of spring flowers.
Creating Cards
Get children’s creativity flowing by having them brainstorm all the things they love about their moms and the things mothers do each day to take care of their families. Have them draw this in a card or booklet (consider adding captions in the children’s own words that explain the drawing they’ve made). For a food-focused card, have each child draw their favourite dishes or foods mom makes then put them all together in a booklet to send home.
Keepsake Flowers
Help children use tissue paper to make flowery gifts that won’t fade after a few days. Check out this video to see how easy and beautiful they can be: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K59404x4D5w
Edible Gifts
Anything in a mason jar decorated with a ribbon is special!
• Spice mixes—think Cajun mix or a rub for chicken or fish
• Hug in a mug--mix seeds like fennel, cardamom, peppercorns, star anise, cinnamon stick and cloves. Add boiling water in a French press or use a strainer. Hot water can be added directly to a mason jar as long you also have a metal spoon in it to conduct the heat so the glass doesn’t break
• Homemade granola (check out our recipe)
• Foot or body scrub (although you wouldn’t want to eat that!)—mix equal parts coarse salt and sugar plus coconut oil and a few drops of an essential oil like lavender
